Anyone with 5 years or
less experience in a mosquito-related field (student, mosquito control, government, industry, etc) is eligible for YP group membership. To officially join, please click the link at the bottom of the page to sign up. Once a member, you’ll receive updates and information on all of the YP activities we have planned throughout the year, including YP member-only events.

Young Professionals Group logoThe AMCA Young Professionals group was started to welcome students and professionals who are just beginning their careers in the mosquito industry and new to AMCA. Our goal is to provide opportunities for YPs to build relationships with each other and with experienced professionals through a variety of activities, and encourage life-long participation in the association. While most of our activities take place at our annual meeting, including a YP dinner, social, and a special symposium, we also host a series of webinars year-round featuring topics of interest to YPs and non-YPs alike.

The official YP website is where you’ll find the most current information about the group, including our mission and goals, information about upcoming events, and our YP webinar archive.

What is the Industry Shadowing Program?
This mentorship program pairs an industry member/exhibitor (sponsor) together with a Young Professional (YP) at the AMCA annual meeting for a unique, interactive (and fun!) opportunity. Sponsors provide a stipend of $1000.00 for travel support for the YP and in turn, the sponsored YP is assigned to shadow the Industry member/exhibitor and participate in their meeting activities for the duration of the conference. Please note that when most educational sessions are taking place, the exhibit hall is closed. This allows the YP to participate in all aspects of the meeting while gaining maximum exposure to education and networking opportunities.

Who is eligible to apply?
YPs with about ≤ 5 years’ experience in any mosquito-related field, including students, researchers, and public health or mosquito control professionals.

Reimbursement Process:
Industry supported funds will be used to reimburse ISP participants after the Annual Meeting. Receipts must be provided to Headquarters in order for the YP to receive reimbursement.

Up to $1,000 will be reimbursed to help cover the costs of travel, hotel, and registration to the 2019 Annual Meeting.

How are recipients selected?
The final determination will be made by the AMCA Young Professionals Advisory Group (YPAG). The YPAG will randomly assign recipients to an industry partner.

What does the travel stipend cover?
YP ISP participants are reimbursed for eligible travel expenses up to one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). Eligible travel expenses are defined as follows:

Airfare: We reimburse the cost (full or partial) of roundtrip coach-class airfare from your home airport to the Orlando area.
Airport parking: If you must leave a vehicle at your home airport, AMCA will reimburse up to $10.00/day, up to a maximum of $50.00 for 5 days.
Driving: If you drive to Orlando, FL from your home city/town, AMCA will reimburse you at the rate of $.545/mile (gas receipts are not reimbursed in addition to mileage reimbursement).
Hotel room costs
Meeting registration: Registration fees will be reimbursed with receipt.

How to apply:
Complete the application by Dec 10, 2018.
A letter of support from a supervisor or professor/advisor must also be provided by the deadline. The letter of support is to include approval to apply for the stipend and attend the meeting if selected. Send LOS to Kristy Burkhalter, ktb3@cdc.gov with “Letter of Support” or “LOS” and the applicant’s name in the subject line.

What to do if you are awarded a travel stipend:
ISP applicants will be notified if they will be receiving support by late December 2018 and who their sponsor will be. The sponsor will contact you to make further arrangements regarding your shadowing program participation, however, you must make your own hotel reservation and travel arrangements. After the meeting, you will send all receipts and your reimbursement request form to AMCA Headquarters. Maximum reimbursement is $1,000; therefore some expenses may only be reimbursed in part, depending on your total expenses.
